THE SOUNDBOARD

The soundboard in Fazioli Pianos is built with the precious wood from Red Spruce from Val di Fiemme in the Western Italian Alps. This is a particularly precious spruce tree:
The main characteristics of this type of wood are:

  • For the high resistance to flexing
  • For the low, specific weight
  • For the regularity in the distance between rings

This is obtained by gluing the red spruce shafts which are cut on the quarter of the trunk and with a variable width, between 8 and 12 cm and with a 12 mm thickness.

The soundboards are seasoned in a climatically controlled chamber for about two years, before they are assembled. Measurements from the center to the extremities are between 9 and 6 mm. This allows for better mobility and greater volume. The ribs are also made of red spruce and are tested for their flexibility before they are glued onto the soundboard in order to guarantee their mechanical characteristics.

The strong, double curvature, obtained by gluing perpendicular shafts (made of the same wood). The bridge, not only offers a counter thrust to the string's pressure (1000 lbs) but also make the soundboard more rigid in order to "move" larger quantities of air and project the sound further away. The soundboard is glued to the structure, which is previously prepared in order to create a counter-tension from the edges to the center. The soundboard acquires the shape of a lens.
